Professional Bed Bug Removal

We always recommend calling a professional vs. attempting to solve a bed bug problem yourself. Professionals have the experience, equipment and access to insecticides that aren't always as easily available to home owners. The biggest downside of hiring a bed bug exterminator is cost, which can include a charge for the inspection and a separate charge for treatment. Together this can cost $750 or more. For this reason we suggest:

Don't be shy about asking questions as they move through the home. Reputable contractors should be willing and able to explain to you what they're doing, why they're doing it and how they're going to treat your problem. Some also offer or refer dog services, employing specially trained dogs to sniff out evidence of bugs.

Be advised: Sprays merely kill the adult bed bugs which means the eggs that have already been laid will hatch into the same problem approximately one month later. This is why other exterminators will tell you it will take multiple treatments

Bedbugs do not seem to spread disease to people. But itching from the bites can be so bad that some people will scratch enough to cause breaks in the skin that get infected easily. The bites can also cause an allergic reaction in some people. Read more about bedbug bites - symptoms, treatments and prevention.

Before viewing the following slides, let me first give you an idea of what you’ll be looking at by showing you bed bugs caught in their natural habitat! Let’s start with a close up picture of an entire life-cycle, from eggs, to shell casings, and finally to maturity. Keep in mind that this infestation went hidden for a very long time before being discovered!

Special thanks to Lou Sorkin, entomologist at the American Museum of Natural History for such a large selection of helpful pics.  All of the images of bed bugs on furniture in this block as well as many of the photos throughout the site are Lou's, and are used with permission via Creative Commons licenses, unless otherwise noted.

Bedbugs have not been conclusively proven to carry infectious microbes. However, health researchers have implicated bedbugs as possible vectors of American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease) in areas where this disease is endemic, and studies are ongoing to determine whether bedbugs may serve as carriers of other diseases.

Even more surprising is the lower-right magnified view of a grommet hole (above) that is completely filled with nymphs and their cast skins. That same hole is located on the right edge of the upper-right image you looked at first.

Bed Bugs Lifespan Without Food

My friend called the CDC and they claimed this is not a public health problem, I beg to differ after suffering both physical and mental trauma. I feel the owners of these apartments should be forced to re house all tenants, replace belongings to a reasonable degree and drop an atomic bomb on the building TWICE! Their must also be a desire within the community to live healthy which I did not witness at this building. It is sad. This is my one choice descriptive word:sad. Once I was no longer consumed by anxiety & sheer terror I thought of the innocent children who reside there and can’t fathom having grown up this way. This is unacceptable. The government should be involved, in my opinion. While I still feel as though something’s crawling on me a day later, and am still suffering severe itching and anxiety, although I know I’ll be okay I’m definitely, absolutely traumatized. Their simply aren’t words to describe this experience. No matter what I wrote, unless you experience it you’ll never know the he’ll these disgusting creatures are.

When Do Bed Bugs Travel

Typically, no treatment is required for bedbug bites. If itching is severe or if an allergic reaction to the bites occurs, topical steroid creams or oral antihistamines may be used for symptom relief. Secondary bacterial infections that develop over heavily scratched areas may require antibiotics.

Check to see if you can identify the rust-colored fecal stains, egg cases, and shed skins (exuviae) in crevices and cracks on or near beds. A sweet, musty odor is sometimes present. You should also look at other areas such as under wallpaper, behind picture frames, in couches and other furniture, in bedsprings and under mattresses, and even in articles of clothing. While fecal stains and skin casts suggest that bedbugs have been present, these do not confirm that the infestation is still active. Observing the bedbugs themselves is definitive confirmation that an area is infested. You may require professional assistance from a pest-control company in determining whether your home contains bedbugs.

Many news reports in recent years have focused on the discovery of bedbugs and their health effects (even in upscale hotels), and a number of lawsuits have been filed by guests of fashionable hotels who awoke to find hundreds of bedbug bites covering their skin. Searching on travel-review web sites regularly reveals information and even photos confirming the presence of bedbugs in numerous hotels.

Bedbug bites may go unnoticed or be mistaken for flea or mosquito bites or other types of rash or skin conditions, since the signs of bedbug bites are difficult to distinguish from other bites or skin conditions. Bedbugs also have glands whose secretions may leave musty odors, and they also may leave dark fecal spots on bed sheets and around places where they hide (in crevices or protected areas around the bed or anywhere in the room).

Here is a close up photo of a blood filled bed bug that burst open into the hand of a person searching for an infestation. You can clearly see the eggs, what’s left of the bug, and the blood coming in contact with skin – and who knows where that blood came from!

Don’t let their tiny size fool you into thinking they’re harmless! These little bugs know exactly where to hide, when and who (yes, they can be selective) to bite and have driven many of their victims insane.

Bed Bugs can also be found on and inside wood furniture like night stands, dressers and book shelves. They like the cracks and crevices of joints between pieces of wood and can even be found in screw holes.  The two pictures below show evidence of bed bugs on a wooden shelving unit.  The little white spots on the side of the shelf are eggs, the beige spots are bedbug nymphs and the black dots are fecal matter. The bigger bug in the picture on the right is a German cockroach.

will bed bugs bite pets

Home remedies for bedbug bites include anything that relieves and controls itching, such as cool compresses, oatmeal baths, or a paste made of baking soda and water. Home remedies can also include over-the-counter medications to combat itching, such as antihistamines.

Typically, bed bugs hide out close to their source of food (see top 8 hiding spots). But, as infestations grow, bed bugs tend to spread out from the immediate vicinity of their feeding area. While they are not feeding, they will hide out in a wide variety of places. They're super flat, so they can squeeze themselves in to very tight spots like picture frames, electrical outlets, carpet edges and behind window/door moldings and baseboards.

When Bed Bugs Attack

Sleeping with the lights on has not been shown to be effective in preventing bedbug bites. Conventional insect and tick repellents are also not useful against bedbugs, so one should not try to avoid being bitten by using insect repellent at night.

How Bed Bugs Travel

Bedbugs can live in any area of the home and can hide in tiny cracks in furniture as well as on textiles and upholstered furniture. They tend to be most common in areas where people sleep and generally concentrate in beds, including mattresses or mattress covers, box springs, and bed frames. They do not infest the sleeping surfaces of beds as commonly as cracks and crevices associated with the bed frame and mattress. Other sites where bedbugs often reside include curtains, edges of carpet, corners inside dressers and other furniture, cracks in wallpaper (particularly near the bed), and inside the spaces of wicker furniture.

Why Bed Bugs Don't Bite Babies

This photo on the right shows signs of much heavier infestation, including cast skins, fecal droppings and many eggs on the underside of the chair upholstery - something  to keep in mind when you are checking for bed bugs.

At home, do not store luggage under your bed. Ideally, luggage should be stored in a basement or garage. Other tips you can take to reduce the chances of bedbugs infesting your home include removing clutter, vacuuming frequently, and keeping belongings separate when taken to school or work.

Getting rid of bedbugs is not an easy process, and most cases of bedbug infestation will require treatment by a pest control expert. Bedbugs can survive for up to a year without feeding, so they may persist even in unoccupied rooms.

Adult bedbugs are reddish brown in color, appearing more reddish after feeding on a blood meal. Nymphs are clear in color and appear bright red after feeding. The wings of bedbugs are vestigial, so they cannot fly. However, they are able to crawl rapidly.

Bed Bugs With Infants

Bedbugs live in any articles of furniture, clothing, or bedding, so they or their eggs may be present in used furniture or clothing. They spread by crawling and may contaminate multiple rooms in a home or even multiple dwellings in apartment buildings. They may also hide in boxes, suitcases, or other goods that are moved from residence to residence or from a hotel to home. Bedbugs can live on clothing from home infestations and may be spread by a person unknowingly wearing infested clothing.

In addition to hotels, bedbug infestations have been found in movie theaters, office buildings, laundries, shelters, in transportation vehicles, and other locations with high-occupant turnover where people may congregate.

The pest control expert may recommend certain forms of deep-cleaning such as scrubbing infested surfaces with a stiff brush to remove eggs, dismantling bed frames and furniture, filling cracks in floors, walls, and moldings, encasing mattresses within special bags, or using a powerful vacuum on cracks and crevices.

This image is a great example of what you’ll look for when trying to spot an infestation. Simply lift up the mattress out of the frame and if you see something that looks like this, then you need to act, and fast! Send us a photo if you do!

This set of pictures is a great example of how bed bugs easily "hide in plain sight". Take a close look at the picture in the upper right corner of the collage.  See any bed bugs?  If you found a couple - that's not bad.

Bed Bugs Is Landlord Responsible

Bedbugs are small oval non-flying insects that belong to the insect family Cimicidae, which includes three species that bite people. Adult bedbugs reach 5 mm-7 mm in length, while nymphs (juveniles) are as small as 1.5 mm. Bedbugs have flat bodies and may sometimes be mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches. Bedbugs feed by sucking blood from humans or animals.

Can Bed Bugs Live On You

Here are some close-up pics of bed bug excrement and bed bug eggs. While the fecal stains on sheets at the top of the page look like back marker stains, the droppings themselves look like little black blobs.

Bed Bugs To Get Rid Of

If you haven't already done so, its a good idea to get familiar with what bedbugs look like in all of their life stages. Once you're done here, I also recommend learning more about all 9 signs of bed bug infestation, where they like to hide, and how to look for them.

Is Bed Bugs Hard To Get Rid Of

I also understand addiction which is another common denominator in housing but how does anyone live this way? A park bench, the beach, the grass outside, IDK if it were below freezing, I couldn’t sleep being bitten and simply accept it. I observed several addicts in poverty who had given up on a quality life accusing each other of being the "Host" of this infestation, clearly suffering shame and embarrassment. Not enough to do anything about it however. Nothing less than mind-blowing and frankly traumatic.

As bed bugs grow from birth to adulthood, they molt, or shed their exoskeletons. The cast skins (bedbug shells) they leave behind can be found in and around their harborages (hideouts) and are definite signs of a growing bed bug population.

Another cure picture of bugs but the little little one appears to be shy and trying to hide. Notice the different sized shells, tells an entire story and helps give an idea of how long they have been hiding out there.

Avoidance of infested areas is the method for prevention of bedbug bites. Recognition of bedbug infestation and proper treatment of affected rooms (usually with the help of a pest-control specialist) is the best way to prevent bedbugs in the home. Prevention tips can include sealing your mattress in a bedbug-prevention casing can be beneficial.

General Bed Bug Information

Bed Bug Removal

Also, look for a company that uses the integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Instead of relying entirely on pesticides or chemicals, IPM uses a combination of chemical measures, preventive measures, and sanitation to improve efficacy and limit environmental impact.

At Evergreen Pest & Termite, we can schedule a bed bug specialist to inspect your home. They will determine if you do have active bed bugs. If necessary, they will provide you with possible treatment options.

Bed Bug Treatment For Home

First, take objects out of the drawers and inspect for bed bugs:  Dispose of anything you can in a plastic bag such as books and newspapers. Place objects in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes for added protection (if it can withstand the heat).  Objects such as electronics may hide bed bugs and cannot be sprayed.  Inspect the underside of lamps and anything near the bed.  Objects placed in the freezer for at least 5 days will also be bed bug free (there is some debate here, so if you can, leave items in the freezer for 2 weeks). This can be the perfect approach for objects such as stuffed animals, books and other items that can withstand the cold.

How Much Is Bed Bug Removal

There are many ways by which you can remove bed bugs. Many believe that using ordinary vacuum pumps can be used to remove them from cracks and crevices, and then these can be disposed off in a sealed bag. This method may be effective, but it is not a foolproof way of getting rid of bed bugs. Merely vacuuming is not a solution that hits at the root of the problem. A specialized bed bug removal machine is necessary to do a more effective job. Steam cleaning is acknowledged as one of the most effective ways of dealing with bed bugs.

For a full bed bug removal, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1,500, depending on the method you choose and the experience of your exterminator. Most will charge you a fee for consultation, which includes visiting your home and doing a thorough inspection.

Multiple home bed bug remedies are needed. Use the knock down spray to treat the underside of the drawers (Sterifab or Bug Patrol).  Then treat the inside of the furniture, including any drawer tracks.  Treat the back of the furniture as well.  If using bed bug insecticide spray, follow the use of the knock down spray with the residual spray to kill any bed bugs and bed bug eggs you might have missed.

How Does Bed Bug Treatment Work

Our heating treatment has advantages over other chemical or steam home pest control services in Arizona. For example, chemicals and steam are ineffective unless they target the bed bugs’ exact location. So don’t be fooled by advertised low cost heat treatments, such as steam.

Evergreen Pest & Termite uses true heat treatments, which target every spot in your house. This includes behind outlets, the insides of furniture, and other hard-to-reach spaces for bed bugs in Arizona.

Heat treatment is the safe and effective way of getting rid of bedbugs. Bed bugs can't survive temperatures above 122 degrees. Heat can kills bugs that pesticides can't and is a safer option when dealing with bed bugs. Heat can also get into areas that chemicals cannot. Some bed bugs can now resist 1,000 times the amount of pesticide that they could ten years ago. Bed bugs have evolved three biochemical defenses against pesticides: Thicker exoskeletons, stronger nervous systems and more detoxifying enzymes.

Waking up with red spots on your body can be quite alarming. Often you are unsure as to where they came from or what could be causing them. This may be a sign that bed bugs have been actively feeding. However, it is important to find out if the spots are from another cause, so be sure to have a professional inspection.

After applying dust, place Zippered bed bug bed covers, which are  tested to be bed bug proof, over the mattress and box spring.  It is equally important to cover both.  If you can only afford one cover, cover the box spring and leave the mattress uncovered. Covers are used to trap any bed bugs and bed bug eggs you might have missed inside the mattress and box spring. Bed bugs can live for 12 months without feeding.

2. Vacuum All Surfaces: As mentioned earlier, the vacuum is one of the best tools for bed bug removal. First vacuum the entire room. Then use the crevice tool to vacuum along the baseboards. If you have carpet, consider steam cleaning.  For added protection, add a disinfectant designed to kill parasites such as PuraCleenRX to the cleaning solution.  Test on an out of the way area to see if the disinfectant will stain the carpet before using.  Inspect all carpet edges.

Bed Bugs Or Fleas In My Room?
So Far, I Have About 15 Bites For The Past 3 Weeks Ever Since My Friend's Dog Stepped In My Room. His Dog Does Have Fleas, Which Is Why I Think It Might Be Fleas. I've Washed My Bedsheets And Blanket Every Week. However, That Only Kept The Biting To A Minimal. The Bites Are Itchy And Are Either On My Legs Or Arms. I Wiped Around The Floor Near My Bed And Swept Around My Room. What Is It And How Can I Get Rid Of It?

It doesn't really sound like flea bites, since flea bites are usually on the lower legs and in areas where clothing might be tighter, such as around the waist.

There seems to be almost an epidemic of bed bugs in some places now. If they are bites from bed bugs you need to do much more than wash your sheets.

More recently, as world travel has increased, bedbugs are finding their way into the home through luggage and clothing worn abroad.

Another contributor to the resurgence of bedbugs in the West is changing pest-control practices. Sixty years ago the common use of DDT — which kills most insects — nearly eliminated bedbugs in the United States.

Today the use of DDT is being phased out due to human toxicity concerns. Further, current extermination practices are more insect-specific — what's toxic to a cockroach may not kill a bedbug.

The third link has a lot of good information about what you can do yourself to get rid of bed bugs without calling an exterminator.

Bed bugs are not native to the us - If someone in the household was recently out of the country or you received an item that was from another country then maybe but otherwise you most likely do not. Purchasing A Used Mattress--Can You See Bed Bugs?
I Am Looking At Purchasing A Used Mattress....Can You See Bed Bugs--And Is Safe To Purchase A Used Mattress? Advice Please!! :)

Firstly, there are some signs that a mattress may be infested with bed bugs:

1. Blood stains from crushed bugs or rust spots of excrement on the mattress.

2. Eggshells and shed skins may be found in the vicinity of their hiding places - often in the folds of the mattress.

3. An offensive, sweet, musty odour from their scent glands may be detected when bed bug infestations are severe.

4. Bed bugs are difficult to see as they are nocturnal, fast moving and the way that most people know they are present is by being biten and then identifying the three signs above.

The second part of your question regarding whether it is safe to buy a used mattress, is like the other answer said no, no, no. It will not cause terminal damage to your health if you do so, however it is the thought of what might be in the mattress that is oh so off-putting for most. Not only could you be sharing your bed with bed bugs but also the dried bodily fluids of the previous occupants.

It would be better peace of mind for you if you looked into buying a new mattress, shop around and buy the best new one you can afford. If this is not feasible and you must proceed with the purchase of the second hand mattress, there are a number of things you could do to sanitise it before you use it. Such as steam cleaning it, leaving it out in the open air to release any odours and spraying it with some sort of fabric or upholstery refreasher. Once inside again, you could cover it with an antiallergy mattress protector and all should be fine.

Do Bed Bugs Get In Your Hair?
My Friend And I Saw A Bug On The Bed And We Looked It Up And It Was A Bed Bug. We Only Saw One But Is There Others In My Bed Even If There Isnt Any Holes. And Do They Get In Your Hair

Bedbugs are generally active only at dawn, with a peak feeding period about an hour before sunrise.

Attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, the bug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host.

Bedbugs can lay up to five eggs in a day and 500 during a lifetime. The eggs are visible to the eye measuring 1 mm in length (approx. two grains of salt) and are a milky-white tone. The eggs hatch in one to two weeks. The hatchlings begin feeding immediately. They pass through five molting stages before they reach maturity. They must feed once during each of these stages.

At room temperature, it takes only about five weeks for a bedbug to pass from hatching to maturity. They become reproductively active only at maturity.

I Was Staying Ata Friends House And I Had A Little Bag With Me. If The Bites Are From Bed Bugs Could They Be In My Bag? If So What Can We Do To Dispose Of Them? Please Help!!

More then likley bed bugs.. and yes they can easily travel....you need to heat your clothes in the dryer on hot for at least 45min(DO NOT WASH THEM FIRST)...commercially available bug bombs and sprays do not work..they may seem to control them at first but they will only come back stronger...they are nearly impossible and extremely expensive to get rid of...also your bed linens, blankets and sofa cushions or anywhere you've touched needs to be heated...these things are nasty! they usually come out at night and suck your blood and sometimes leave little welts on your skin but some people don't react to the bites at all?....you can't see the eggs or the babies..they like to go up to the top of the wall and ceiling to leave their droppings(it looks like dirt or thick cobb webs) it is also very easy to transfer them to others... someone can get them just by coming in and sitting on your couch or if you sleep over at someone elses house... if the heat treatments don't work call a professional immediatley but prepared to pay at least a $1000 minimum...

Can Eating Too Many Cough Drops Make You Sick?
Basically, Everyone In My House Is Or Had Just Been Sick With Something. Three Days Ago, My Brother Had A Stomach Bug, And Now I'M Stuck In Bed With A Headache, Stuffy Nose, Soar Throat, And Terrible Fatigue. The Chances I Caught A Stomach Bug Are Fairly Low, Considering The Fact I'Ve Been In My Own Room Since He Came Down With It (I Have A Weird Fear Of Puking), But At A Party I Went To Last Week, A Friend Did Have A Killer Cold, And Now Everyone At That Party (Including The Host'S Three-Year-Old Niece) Is Sick. Thanks. So Last Night And This Morning, I'Ve Been Popping Hall'S Triple Soothing Action Cough Drops Like There'S No Tomorrow. In One Hour This Morning, I Consumed About Seven, Even Though The Bag Says You'Re Only Supposed To Have One An Hour. Last Night, I Probably Had About Five In An Hour. Since About Eleven O'Clock (Twenty Minutes After I Stopped Eating Them) I'Ve Been Sort Of Nauseous And My Stomach'S Been Making Some Pretty Weird Noises. Granted, I Don'T Feel Bad Enough To Puke, But I Don'T Feel Too Great, Either. Is This From The Cough Drops, Or Some Mild Form Of My Brother'S Stomach Flu?

Yes it can make you sick. Depending on the type, some cough drops contain sorbitol which is a natural laxative, also found in some chewing gum. So it is normal you had an upset stomach. Try drinking chamomille or another herbal tea.

There are a few things you can do to minimize the # of bed bug bites. You can do all or some of these tips to reduce the bed bug population in your room and to protect yourself during sleep.

1. Wash blankets and linens in hot water followed by 20 minutes in the dryer.
2. Vacuum the room, box spring, mattress, around baseboards etc with the crevice tool.
3. Spray the bed, box spring and mattress frame with a bed bug mattress safe spray such as Sterifab (1st source in resource).
4. Buy mattress and box spring zippered covers if you can afford them. 2nd resource is for some lower cost covers from WalMart.
5. Move the bed at least 6 inches from the wall and all furniture, keep blankets off the floor
6. Keep blankets off the floor making it difficult for bed bugs to climb onto the bed
7. Put small bowls filled with an inch of talcum or other fine powder under each bed leg or buy Climbup Interceptors (4th resource)
8. Put double sided tape around each bed leg.
9. Wear more clothes to bed. Bed bugs like to bite exposed areas of skin. Wear socks over sweat pants for example to protect the legs. Gloves over a long sleeve shirt to protect the arms.
10. Run a hair dryer on hot, low air setting along seams and tufts of mattress. Hold in each location for 30 seconds. Use rag to kill bed bugs trying to escape heat.

Eeewww - bad memories there. My particular creepy crawlies were roaches, not bed bugs, but UG - they do infest books.

Putting the book in plastic zip-lock bags and leaving them in the car while the car gets very very hot may save you from having to destroy the books. Apparently freezing the books is also an option. Fumigation or a call to the Orkin man may be an option, though I worry that they do as much damage to our bodies as to the bodies of the bugs.
